Ready To Try Something NEW?
Never sailed before but want to try it for a week? This is your chance! A counselor sails in the boat with you and your crewmates to demonstrate the basics and help you to get a feel for being on the water. Register one week at a time: $425
Level 1 Beginner & Intermediate
Our Most Popular Class. Guided by a counselor, you and your crewmates will learn through a combination of practice lessons and on the water games. Designed for ages 10-14 this class can be repeated until the student is ready for the next level. Two weeks: $645
Level 2 Skills Development
The focus of this class is on additional skills development for students ages 12+ with at least two years experience and ready to handle the boat alone with one other crewmate of similar ability. This class can be repeated and is a prerequisite for CITs. Two weeks: $645
On the Water
The goal of our Summer Sailing Program is to teach girls and boys how to sail at their own pace in a safe environment by combining hands-on instruction with fun activities to build confidence, encourage teamwork and develop friendships! All Students will review basic water safety, boat anatomy and the language of sailing. Sessions will include some on-shore instruction but most of the time will be spent out on the sailboats.
Swimming Requirements
Though our sailors are required to wear lifejackets at all times, it is still extremely important that your child is a capable swimmer. An annual swim test is required by both the BSA and the US Sailing Association. If your child is not capable of passing a swimming test, then they will not be allowed to participate in the sailing school and your payment will be refunded. BSA defines a capable swimmer as being able to do the following: Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off and swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be completed in one swim without stops and must include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.
Weather Conditions
Sailing is very much a weather dependent sport. We plan to sail whenever it is possible and safe to do so. However due to weather conditions sailing classes may be canceled or possibly diverted to onshore activities on short notice on the day of the class. We will do our best to communicate these changes when it happens. Please keep an eye on the weather at home as well, as that will help you to know what to expect.
Our Fleet of Boats
Students in the Summer Sailing Program will learn sailing hands-on aboard our fleet of c420 and RS Vision sail boats. These small but nimble boats are ideal for young sailors.
Additional Learning Opportunities
The fun and learning does not have to end when summer is over. The Maritime Explorers Club offers year round opportunites both on and off the water. Annual membership in the Maritime Explorers Club is automatically included with your summer sailing program registration, however participation in the club requires an additional written application and activity fees.
